It seems to me that Black Friday has turned into a whole weekend. There is Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday.A woman pepper sprayed someone over an Xbox. Fights broke out over waffle makers. Really, people?
I understand wanting to save a buck, but the last time I checked, Christmas and the holiday season wasn't about stuff. It's about love. Whether it's Christmas, Kwanzaa or Hanukkah. Christmas is about the birth of Jesus. Kwanzaa celebrates heritage and culture. Hanukkah is about the Jewish temple being rededicated to God after their temple was used by another culture to worship a different god. Where in all of this is their the celebration and praise of fighting, greed, selfishness, and materialism?
While you are fighting over that waffle iron, or trying to find every object on a child's wish list or fretting about giving everyone you know a gift, let us not forget this holiday season that there are children who wish they had a family, homeless men and women who just want a warm meal, and countless others who could care less about xboxes, waffle makers, toys, and such.
All they care about is family and having their most basic needs met. I challenge us all to challenge the way things are and learn to embrace and be thankful for everything we already have: Friends, family, homes, our basic needs being met. Let us return our focus to what these holidays ultimately stand for, love, fellowship, and family.
